Medical Device Expert Spotlight
At Test Labs, our people are at the heart of what we do, and we’re proud to introduce one of our key team members in this edition of Expert Spotlight – Gabriela, our Laboratory Scientist. With a background in Forensic Science and passion for genetics, Gabriela brings precision to our lab.
We invite you to learn more about Gabriela.
What do you do at Test Labs?
I work as a Laboratory Scientist focusing on medical device and disinfection testing in a UKAS-accredited ISO 17025 lab. It’s a highly regulated environment, and I contribute to both GLP and non-GLP projects to ensure everything we do meets the necessary standards. Right now, I’m in the initial learning phase since I joined just a few months ago, and I’m lucky to be surrounded by a team that’s incredibly supportive and always willing to teach. What I love most is how dynamic this field is, no two days are ever the same, and each one brings something new to get curious about.
Where did your interest in science stem from?
Science was always my strongest subject at school, but I truly fell in love with it when I started my biology degree in Italy. That’s when I discovered the beauty of how life works at a cellular and molecular level, especially in genetics and molecular biology. Over time, that passion evolved into a real curiosity about medical science and how it can directly impact people’s lives. It’s amazing how something so microscopic can play such a big role in human health.
Have you always wanted to be a Laboratory Scientist?
Yes, since high school I’ve been fascinated by the mechanisms behind life and how everything works at a cellular and molecular level. That curiosity has never left me. I know it’s something people often say, but I truly believe that obstacles in life are there to help us grow. They push us to become more passionate, more resilient, and more determined. The path isn’t always easy, but it’s through those challenges that we become the best version of ourselves.
What would your advice be for someone thinking of becoming a Laboratory Scientist?
Be curious, and don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Science isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about asking the right questions and learning from the process. There will be setbacks, and sometimes you’ll feel stuck, but that’s part of the journey. If you’re truly passionate, those moments will push you to work harder, think deeper, and keep moving forward. Surround yourself with people who inspire you, and never stop exploring.
What are you looking forward to most about working at Test Labs?
I’m really enjoying working on cytotoxicity and disinfectant validation projects. Every process has its own complexity and fascination. What excites me most is the opportunity to keep learning. Each week, I try to pick up something new, and thanks to my colleagues, I always end the week feeling more confident than when it began. It’s a great feeling to grow professionally in such a positive and collaborative environment.
What do you get up to when you’re not testing and analysing medical devices?
Outside the lab, I’m a bit of a mix. I love winding down with a good book, but I also enjoy getting outside for long walks to clear my head. I’m always looking to learn something new, whether it’s through studying, reading, trying a new hobby, or experimenting in the kitchen (with mixed results, I’ll admit!). I also make time for Pilates and really value spending quality time with the people closest to me. It’s all about balance and recharging so I can show up at my best.
